My flatmate Riley has started a blog, also about starting adult life and stuff. Fortunately she is a more frequent blogger than I am, and she is pretty funny. The blog is called Growing Up Broke and well worth a read you can find it here.
So far she has posts covering:
- Moving in
- Neighbours
- What your parents didn't tell you
- Deadlines
- And why adults don't have sleepovers
Totally unrelated - Blogger's spell check doesn't recognise the words blog or blogger.
Welcome to my blog, it documents my search for 'adult' life, I may have already achieved this but I don't feel very 'adult'. Here you'll find the proper introduction.

I have 5 living rooms
And no bed.
After finally working out how to change my address with the jobcentre, I rang them to sort it out. I am less than great with phone calls...
After I answered all the questions in order to confirm that I was me (and apparently knowing my mobile number is one of them, surely they could tell that I was ringing from it?) we moved on to questions about the flat. I excelled at these questions... Honest.
So I have five living rooms and no bed, as when I woke up this morning I was
on the floor. I've tried blowing my air bed up since but it has a hole in it.
Not to worry though as my real bed gets delivered soon! … Or so I thought.
[Enter Argos]
They rang again this morning... they are not delivering my bed tomorrow, so for the second time they are rescheduling. I'm never going to get this bed.

Advisor: "Do you pay [something
I can't remember the name of]?"
Me: "What?"
Advisor: [Repeats previous statement]
Me: "I don't know what that is"
Me: "I don't know what that is"
Advisor: "How many living rooms
do you have?"
I heard: "how many rooms do
you have?"
Me: "Five."
Advisor: "Five?"
Advisor: "Five?"
Me: "No, four"
Advisor: [shocked] "Four?"
Advisor: [shocked] "Four?"
Me: [picking up on his shock]
"I'm sorry, did you ask how many bedrooms I have?"
Advisor: "No, how many living rooms do you have"
Advisor: "No, how many living rooms do you have"
[After establishing that I have 1
living room, 1 kitchen, 1 bathroom and 2 bedrooms he realised my earlier
mistake.]
Advisor: "Was the last place you
lived privately owned?"
Me: "I was homeless" [then I laughed, it's not funny]

The TV unit that never existed...
Since before moving into the flat we had seen a TV unit that we both thought
was ideal. Once we moved in, we decided that it was perfect, and we couldn't
wait to get it. First thing’s first though, I went to order a bed now that I
had money to buy it with.
That was a week and a half ago.
Today was not a good day for the furniture of our flat.
We went into town, excited that we'd finally be getting our beloved and long-awaited TV unit. Yeah... they didn't have the TV unit. I know what you are thinking, and it wasn't just out of stock. It never, ever existed! We'd made it up. We had both walked into the shop looked at a unit (which might I add; on second look neither of us liked much), then we both walked out of the shop thinking it looked different than it did. Not even that - we each thought it looked completely different. If we had ever had a conversation in the last two weeks in which we described the TV unit rather than just refer to it as 'the TV unit' we would have noticed that we had imagined the whole thing.
And just to make the day even better than the fact we'd gone into town for nothing; Argos phoned and my bed will not arrive next week, it'll be another two weeks. Another two weeks of sleeping on the airbed in a room piled high with stuff that would live under my bed.
Oh and despite TalkTalk telling us that there was already a phone line connected to the flat (which is why we went with them). It turns out that the line is not in fact connected so an engineer will have to come out.
On a brighter note, we now have a fridge freezer. Fridges are underrated.

"Where's my bag?... Maybe it's in the bath"
"What are you looking for?"
"My purse have you see it anywhere?"
"Have you checked the bath?"
It's not often you get to say a sentence like that.
I certainly did not expect to be saying it the week I moved into my first 'adult' flat that's for sure. I apparently have far to much stuff to fit into my room, so in order to get a set of draws in there I had to dump the majority of my stuff in the bath. It wouldn't be so bad if I had a bed to put my stuff under, unfortunately I can't afford a bed right now. There is a lot of stuff we don't have, a cooker or fridge/freezer, we do at least have a kettle and a microwave though. At least it keeps making cups of tea interesting as we have to play the fun game of guess when the milk is off (if only either of us knew what milk is supposed to smell like).
